Taekwondo belt order: what beginners should know

Belt order is a training roadmap, not a costume chart. Color belts mark skills the instructor has already seen in class. This page answers how long belts take and whether you can skip them.

How long does it take to get each belt in Taekwondo?

Each color belt usually takes months of regular class, not a weekend seminar. Schools differ. At NWBBA, promotion happens when the student can perform the required kicks, forms, and class habits — not on a calendar alone. Ask in the trial how testing is scheduled for kids versus adults.

Can you skip belts in Taekwondo?

Not as a shortcut. A student who already trained elsewhere may be placed above white after an instructor looks at their forms and sparring. That is placement, not buying a rank. Skipping colors without skill is how belt charts become meaningless.

What is the taekwondo belt order for beginners?

Beginners start at white belt, then move through color belts into black belt. The exact color sequence is taught in class so students know the next test. Black belt is a training rank, not a finish line. See also taekwondo belt levels.

How long does it take to earn a black belt in taekwondo?

A first-degree black belt typically takes years of consistent class, not a 90-day challenge. Speed claims without attendance requirements are a warning sign. NWBBA's path is weekly class, testing when ready, then more training after black belt. Start with the beginner taekwondo class in Lynnwood.
